How to make a software tutorial

I found some great little bits of software that are less than $100 and are so easy to use it is silly. One, CamStudio, is a little screen recorder that is Open Source, that produces large .avi files, complete with audio if you want. The neat trick is that once recorded you can click a button and have the software convert your file to a much smaller Flash file. It even makes a little HTML page for the flash to play in, so all you need to do is cut and paste the HTML into your tutorial web page and bang, it’s done.

If you can run to around $80 then I’d recommend the next step up. Bulent’s Screen Recorder is a complete studio for doing screen capture. It does everything CamStudio does but adds a very easy to use editor as well as the abiltiy to add simple graphical overlays and sub titles. Really great stuff.

If you have the budget, forget all the above and just go and buy Camtasia. It is what the pro’s use, but it is several hundred dollars.
